Dinner Quadro on the 28th of November 2023
November was in my and my team’s hands – many thanks to Albert and David for their input.
In addition to my comments in the report itself, I wish to highlight the very high consumption of 1.4 bottles per head. Even if one takes into consideration some undistributed wine left over and the undrunk discard, that’s a lot especially when one considers that the reds were all 14%+ alcohol!
My outright favourite of the night was the Vargas Grand Reserva which could be attributed to my preference for aged wines. It was good to note that a lot of the better and younger producers do not ‘overage’ in barrels their Grand Reservas as was traditional resulting in a somewhat tired and sometimes (personal opinion) oxidised wines. Most are now transferring their G.R. to the bottle as soon as the required minimum 2 years have passed. I found this 2012 to still have significant freshness but with elegant and mature tannins, ripe red fruit on the nose and a balsamic, spicy and dark fruit palate with a long finish.
